My cat has lost a patch of hair behind one of his ears. it looks as if it has been shaved, it doesn't look itchy, but i can see a small wound there. I'm scared as I have no idea what it could be.

There could be several reasons for this:

1 your cat has been in a fight with another cat.

2 your cat could have caught his fur going through a fence.

But the most probable reason is:

3 your cat has been scratching his ear alot and with scratching fur does come out, and if their claws are long they may just catch the skin causing a small wound.

There are a few things to check:

If your cat has fleas, this could be why he is scratching.

Look at the wound, is the area red, is the wound continuing to bleed, is there any pus coming out of the wound, is it very deep. If any of these things is yes then take your cat to the vet. But, it sounds like something very minor, just like when we scratch ourselves. Just bathe the wound with warm salt water 3 times daily, keep checking it, and if any of the above starts to happen, take him to the vet.

But most importantly, don't worry it sounds like he is OK. I know that is easier said than done as I have got cats and they always do things that worry me.

Just remember to bathe it with warm salt water using some cotton balls.

is your cat allowed outside? if so than he could of gotten into a fight with another animal. if it looks infected make sure to take him to see a vet.

could have been in a fight or more unusual if you have another pet they could have been licking your cat to wash it and licked it bald my dads dog did that to his cat

its unlikely it has been shaved. what is more likely is that it has been fighing and another cat has bitten it. just think what a cats tongue is like and how it can remove fur. the wound is probably a tooth or claw mark.

dont worry, but keep an eye on it as wounds from cat fights get easily infected

If you can see a wound you need to take the cat to the vet very soon. It could have been bite by a spider or snake. You need to let him be checked by a vet to make sure.

There was a girl the other day saying the exact same thing as you and she took her cat to the vet and it was a snake bite.

take it to vet , could be serious, but if its a small wound then it could be some kinda flea or tick ,and it scratched it for long till it turned this way and got infected

Apart from it being abducted by aliens, it's probably just been in a scrap with another cat. However, my cat does suffer an allergy which (especially in the summer) causes it to develop sores on its skin. See if it clears up, if not you'll have to take him to the vet.

my cat had a similar prob and i found out that he had fleas and had scratched the flea bite and made it bleed, bathe with some antiseptic on cotton wool and if its fleas get rid, hope this helps.

hi, more information would be useful on this one - for instance if your cat is a male that hasn't been neutered he may simply of had a harmless fight over a female. Or if your cat is quite old the two may be unrelated and the balding might just be aging. This happens to my cats often and i think the baldness is nothing to worry about, although you may want to get the wound checked by a vet in case its infected. hope this helps,

if the wound is circular it could be ringworm can be treated but is contagious, take him to the vet just incase

It might be caused by a flee bite. That happended to my cat. The bite got infected and got bigger.

your kitty could just have scratched it raw. you know how cats use their hind feet to scratch behind their ears? well, it could have caught behind his ear. my cat has done that before on her neck, but i just cleaned it with a wet cotton ball (kitty might not like it if you use alcohol) but that just keeps it clean until it all heals up and doesn't get infected. if it starts to look infected or you just get worried, take him to the vet. i'm sure it's nothing serious.
