My guinea pig is about 5 years old and is really healthy and strong. She gave birth two times and looks in very good condition. Over the past 2 weeks i have noticed around her hips and leg area she lost some hair and there is like a patch of boldness. Does anyone know why?
I thought it might be because shes quite old although my freinds guinea pig died at age 9.5 and i read they usually live 10 years
Thanks!
Why is my guinea pig loosing hair?
Your piggie might have mites. You may have caught it early because you haven't given all the symptoms of mites. The mites live under her skin. It makes them itch, their fur to fall out and at the most severe they can cause seizures. My piggie suffered from the seizures. They can also cause your piggie's skin to turn a different sickly color. She also probably doesn't like to be held - it hurts too much to be touched. If she is scratching so much that she is causing sores and keeps opening them up, it has progressed very far (and she is not a lot of pain).
The thing about guinea pigs is that they are prey animals. So they try to act like they're fine even if they are not - so this makes it hard to tell when they really start feeling ill.
Unfortantly, there is nothing you can do without taking her back to the vet. When I took my piggie to the vet it cost around $65 dollars to get all of his medication. The vet gave us a sulfer-smelling "dip" that I rubbed on him with cotton balls, he was given shots and had an oral medication that he was taking from an eye dropper.
I can only suggest that you start cleaning out her cage completly. I don't think this will cure her of mites but it might stop them from spreading and might kill some of them off that are living in the cage (the bedding). A regular cleaning involves the sweeping out of bedding (pine is best as cedar is prone to causing lung problems) and then washing it down with vinegar (vinegar is best to pick up that stubborn guinea pig poop!). After that wash it again with bleach and wash the food containers using bleach and soap too.
I wish you luck with your piggie! I hope she gets better soon.

If she is pregnant again, she could be pulling fur off of herself to line the nest to get ready for the babies.
Or she may have a skin condition.
Keep an eye on her- if her skin gets red or irritated, consider getting her seen by a vet.

That usually happends because of a mite infestation or allergic reaction... if you have changed her bedding lately be sure to steer clear of pine %26amp; ceder the oils in those 2 types of littler cause allergic reactions. Also if she has fleas that will do it too, you can use Frontline flea treatment on her.

could be mites. Take your guinea pig to the vet for some injections. Mites can cause hair loss and itching so it can be uncomfortable

With her age, I would take her to the vet. She more than likely has ovarian cysts, which cause hormonal imbalances and hairloss, it's especially common when sows have been bred, just like when you don't fix dogs.

I agree with other people that it may be some sort of infection or mites, but also something to think about it guinea pigs can only have a few litters before their health starts to deteriorate. The guinea pig body goes through quite a lot of stress during pregnancy and they can only have 2 or 3 litters. It might be because of her pregnancies. I would take her to the vet and not mate her anymore.
