If you knew chemo would cause you to lose your hair, would you wait for it to fall out or shave it f

Just curious. I am currently preparing for more radiation for recurrent thyroid cancer and also am facing the possibility of having colon cancer. I told my husband that if I had to have chemo ever that I would shave my head before it had a chance to fall out. Just curious as to what others would/have done in that situation.

Trust me, radiation first off it no fun but I've manage to kind of turn it around. I got diagnosed with A.L.L on the 5th of Oct and soon afterwards, a tumor in my brain. Here's how I look at it, you can only live life once and why not go on with a fight and meanwhile, have fun with it.

Here's what I did, called up all my friends (I'm I turned 18 a month later, on the 27th of Nov) and told them we are having a party. They showed up and I brought out the "killer" as we called it in our house and had a shaving party. It was quite fun. That's how I would look at it, have fun and enjoy everything that you have!

I would probably shave my head. I would be traumatized at seeing it fall out, so I would just shave it. Good luck with the chemo!

It will grow back as soon as chemo regimen is over. I would shave it. I have NHL (non-Hodgkins lymphoma) and probably will start chemo in June. I have shaved my head for 13 years. My brother-in-law says that I should start wearing a wig when I start chemo!!

After watching my mom %26amp; my aunt go through chemo, I say just shave it off. It gets so dry and tangled while falling out, it's just not worth it. Plus, the treatments make you so tired, the last thing you need to worry about is trying to make the hair thing work. Get some fun scarves, hats, and wigs and be fabulous.

By the way, my mom has been a survivor of colon cancer for 10+ years. And she still keeps her hair short just because she likes the ease of styling.

I've never had cancer, but I think I would shave my head first. I think that a bald head is more beautiful than a thinning one. Also, a young friend of mine has had cancer and said that during chemo, her falling out hair was painful, so she shaved her head before each chemo treatment. Good luck and stay strong. :)

My son has undergone high dose chemotherapy successfully. He decided to not shave his really thick hair. The first few rounds of chemo all his darker hair fell out first and left short blonde hair. It took almost three or four months but it all finally came out. It didn't bother him to lose his hair. Right now his hair is all coming back in (the type of chemo he's been on didn't cause hair loss this time - he is currently no evidence of disease).

The problem with shaving it is that you need to make sure that your hair is in a growth period to coincide with the chemo treatment. Otherwise you will shave your head only to have it all start growing back again between treatments! Than you take chemo and all these tiny sharp hairs start to fall out. I bet nobody ever tells you that. :-) Or, like one of our friends who had really beautiful long hair, knew she was going to have chemo, had it all shaved off, only to have her doctor change plans and go for surgery instead!

Good luck no matter which way you decide to go.

When I went through chemo and radiation, I refused to shave my head, so I let my long hair keep growing. When it started falling out, it was a huge mess and I had to clean up hair all the time. I would suggest not shaving your head until you're sure you will have to go through chemotherapy, but cutting it short would be good if you do have chemo.

On a personal note, I am so sorry you have to go through this and best wishes for you and your husband

I have hair that's just past my shoulders and I'm about to start chemo. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do, but I might cut my hair very short but stylish, and then, if and when it does start to fall out, I'll go ahead and shave it then. I don't need to see my long hair all over my pillow, or going down the drain.....I did that when I was 15 and had Hodgkin's and it wasn't an easy thing to see.

Shaving might make it easier for you. When your hair falls out it falls out progressively and you find hair everywhere! I would shave it, then go by myself some awesome hats, and really cute wigs!

Shave it it will save a lot of time cleaning hair off things

NO WHEN I HAD RADIATION PASS FOR THE SAME THING NEVER SHAVE JUST LEAVE IT LIKE THAT IT WOULD FALL BY IT SELF.

My mom has bone cancer and she said that her head hurt when her hair fell out the first time....so then She shaved it off the next time, bought a baseball cap....and had a cute pin made that said: "Hair by Chemo" she told everyone that it was a French Hairstylist.....made her smile though!!

My best friend has had chemo and shaved off when she saw she was losing too much.

I think I would also shave it off. Like, it gives you a measure of control, you did it, not the chemo. And also you dont get to be bothered by hair all over the place, which can be annoying as well as distressing.

I didn't want to lose my hair, so I didn't shave it off until it started to come out. You definitely don't want to wait for it all to fall out, becuase it doesn't happen at once. It's messy as heck and looks really bad.

I listened to my whole whiny family. They told me I'd feel so much better about myself if I just kept what hair I had. It looked horrible and I finally just handed Mum a pair of scissors and said, "Short as you can." She got the hint. This time, if my hair starts falling out, it's getting shaved then and there.

I'd wait, though. You may be lucky and have it not fall out.

why not just wait till / if / when it actually starts? just be aware of it so that you can catch it before it gets all wispy.

go ahead and shave..one of the saddest sights is clumps of hair in the shower drain the first time..besides, bald is sheek

I would not go for chemo. I already read somewhere that it is not as effective as people think.
